Issue VI: March 2011
 571.248.0200

Hi Friends,

We are well into 2011, and it has been wonderful to see familiar faces and welcome new ones. The best way to get back on track this year is to have a plan outlining sensible goals that fit your lifestyle comfortably. Think long-term versus immediate gratification. It's not uncommon for positive results to take 6 to 8 weeks.

In this issue one of our very first members, Julie Boutwell, shares her story and motivation. Our vision at Balans is to provide a place that nurtures conscious eating combined with proper training for your body. If you have any questions or thoughts on your plan to wellness, we are here at the Studio to guide and help you. Looking forward to seeing you soon at Balans.

Get Inspired. | by Julie Boutwell

Not since organized high school sports have I been this dedicated to exercise. Its due in part to the great staff and mix and variety of classes offered in a non-gym atmosphere, as well as convenient location and times.

I have been coming to Balans for four and a half months, since the Studio first opened. I have noticed a great change in my endurance and strength as a result of my class schedule. I can actually see my triceps muscle! Joking aside. Also, I can tell that I have a much stronger core band and feel more balanced.

My motivation to join the Studio? Well It is a “studio” not a gym. The Studio offers a nice compliment that focus on mind, body, and soul. I truly appreciate the small class size and relationships that I have developed with the very knowledgeable professional instructors. I have been taught that it is smart to mix it up and challenge your muscles, so I like to incorporate cardio with the strength classes. TRX® intimidated me initially, but it offers the greatest variety of options for full-body strength training. Recent TRX® classes incorporate Cardio too, so there is no way to ever get bored.

After 4 months I’m amazed at what I now can do with those straps. I was new to yoga but have found that yoga is necessary not only to stretch and relax, but it has taught me to slow down and clear my mind, now I am equally excited about BarWorks. If you want to see different results, you have to be willing to try something different – Give Balans a try!

Training Tips - HIIT | by Josefin Persson Kennedy

Are you familiar with HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)? The idea is to mix high-intensity burst of exercise with moderate-intensity recovery periods. The best known “protocol” for high intensity interval training is called Tabata Training. Tabata Training was developed by Izumi Tabata at the National Institute of Fitness and Sport in the Tokyo. It became popular after a 1996 study showed that the four-minute protocol produced significantly greater gains in both VO2 max and anaerobic capacity than traditional moderate intensity exercise. Other studies have shown that it’s also better for fat loss.

Interested in trying this type of training? Then try our TRX® Circuit Classes, TRX® Cardio Classes or TRX®/Cycle Classes. HIIT gives you great core strength and a terrific overall workout. It is a wonderful balance to practicing Yoga, Pilates or Balans BarWorks.

Yoga at Balans: A Holistic Approach

A Workout for Mind, Body, Spirit | by Brieanne K. Mould, RYT

Our yoga classes will fit perfectly into any combination of classes that you choose. For better focus and clarity of mind, try adding a class right before any of our other programs. Or maybe you prefer one at the end of the day after a high intensity TRX®, or Zumba® class for relaxation purposes. Yoga is not competitive, and is accessible to any body type/weight or physically challenged individuals.

Each posture taught will challenge your balance, core strength, focus, and flexibility. The practice of yoga cultivates commitment and discipline, which are helpful when making long-term lifestyle changes. Yoga was designed not only to exert and activate the body, but to connect the mind to the body. In fact, the ancient word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj meaning to bind, and join the entire self: body, mind and soul.

Whether you are on your way home from work, or starting out the day, Balans invites you to decompress while working your entire body through this moving meditation. Our classes will expose you to: Sanskrit, the yogic language, asanas, the postures, Drishti, point of gaze or focus and breath control, pranayama, and awareness of body positioning, alignment.

In our yoga classes, we practice vinyasa, the marriage of movement and breath, and learn to hold postures by applying drishti, and pranayama. Per Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the father of Ashtanga Yoga, yoga is 99% practice, and 1% theory. Come see what this practice is all about. Expand your intentions and attain a relaxed mind, increased flexibility, and a more toned body with just one hour of practice. Leave your worries at the door, turn the auto pilot mode off, and be present with us at Balans.
